Question:
I have a Raynor Garage Door Opener for a single door two car garage with
a broken overhead spring. The local Raynor supplier wants $175.00 to
install two new springs. This seams expensive. I can buy a new Genie
for that amount. The dealer will sell me the springs for $1.45 per
inch. This will be about $70 dollars.
How difficult is it to replace the overhead springs? Do I need special
tools? or is it worth having someone else do it? I have never worked on
this type of door and spring combination. I have installed the springs
on the side before. I'm thinking it may be better to just replace the
opener and make future maintenance easier and possibly cheaper.
Answer:
To replace the springs you will need a crescent wrench, two 1/2 inch steel
rods about 18 inches long, and a step ladder. The process is not
difficult,
but has the potential of being VERY DANGEROUS. If you get and read
the instructions carefully before you start, and are very careful, you
shouldn't
have any problem. I got my springs, steel rods, and instructions at Fleet
Farm for around $50 (if memory serves me).
