Question:
Does anyone have any info about the Schlage Keepsafer Plus residential
alarm system? This was manufactured a number of years ago as a
do-it-yourself wireless system. I am in need of some components, but since
they're not made any more, I was wondering if other brand products would
work as well.
Answer:
These units were manufactured by Linear which has made the
technology for various alarm applications since the early 1980's.
The units are reasonably reliable but the transmitter technology is
strictly in the "garage-door-openers" category.
The worst thing about them and the reason we stopped using them for
monitored security systems is that the handheld Linear D-24 and the
miniature ET-2 transmitters started showing up on some car alarms.
With a 1-of-256 housecode, it's unlikely that you will get any
interference from other fixed base alarms systems in the
neighborhood (they don't move once installed). But since the
linear products were also sold into garage doors, and worse, auto
alarm applications, you now have a mobile cadre of portable units
waiting to cause a false alarm on your system if they are keyed in
your vicinity and their housecode is the same as yours. We did
have this happen and dropped all linear stuff like a hot potato as
soon as we figured what was going on.
