Question:
We have a new home, and they installed Liftmaster garage door openers, and
I have some questions:
1) They installed the upper supports directly to the joists in the garage
ceiling. Apparently, they did this because they install the door openers
before they put the drywall on the ceiling.
2) The master bedroom is directly above the garage, and every time the
garage door is open, there is a loud humming sound in the bedroom.
I am not so much concerned about the noise, but I am concerned that the
vibration may, over time, increase the chances of the subfloor in the
bedroom to pull out from the floor joists.
I notice in looking through the Liftmaster manual, that they sell a noise
reduction kit.
Has anyone had any experience with this? Is it worth installing it?
Also, at the same time, should we ask the builder to re-do the ceiling
supports so that they're attached to the ceiling drywall instead of
directly to the joists (they look terrible anyway, sticking through the
drywall)?
Answer:
No! You can't make structural mounts on drywall, you have to connect to
the joists. The Liftmaster/Sears openers are noisy but very reliable.
They will not have any affect on a properly installed floor
