Question:
I'm thinking of replacing my current non-insulated 16x7 garage door with an
insulated one. My reasons are two-fold. I would like to use the garage as
a shop during our cold Wisconsin winters and its currently uninhabitable
even when its only in the 30s outside. I can't imagine how its going to
feel in there when its gets to be subzero. Secondly, the master bedroom
sits on top of the garage and can get quite cold as a result.
2 walls in the garage are insulated while the (third) one that is below
ground level is not. I believe the ceiling is insulted by can't tell for
sure because its been drywalled. There is already heat plumbed into the
garage (we have a boiler heat system). So before I pop for a new $750
insulated garage door, I wanted to see if this was likely to help
*considerably* in keeping the garage warm. It's a 390 series from the
Overhead Door Company and has an R value of 9.83.
All feedback appreciated.
Answer:
well living in south lousiana i was also thinking of an insulated garage
door, not for the cold, but for the heat of the summer. when in the
garage in the hot summer months you can hardly touch the garage door on
the inside. i guess that every little bit will help. right now all we
have is the 4 or five panels roll up door, with the wooden frames and
the masonite in the middle panels.
i would say yes if thats all they can do for you. If you not going to
use the garage for a car, i have a neighbor who put up a wall behind his
garage door and had it insulated. he made it into a temporary game room.
he leaves his car outside.. but if need be he can take down this wall,
not an everyday thing.......
