Question:
Although some of you live in the South or SouthWest, I'm stuck up here in
New England and am beginning to freeze my ass off while working on my Jeep.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a portable heater that would see temporary
duty in my garage?
Answer:
Last fall I insulated my garage, installed drywall, and painted
the interior white. Then I installed a natural gas powered, fan
forced, vented, 45,000 btu hanging space heater. The development
of fan forced venting has changed the design of these things a
lot. The model I got hangs down only fifteen inches from the
ceiling, and neatly fits over my garage doors when open. Cost was
$600 for the heater and about $300 for plumbing, electrical, and
various hardware supplies. Add to that about $400 for drywall,
insulation, and paint and for $1300 I have transformed a dingy
cold two car garage into a light pleasant warm work environment.
It can get darn cold in the South or Southwest, by the way
Just remember you need some ventilation..
That Kerosene heater will produce carbonmonoxide.
First thing I'd suggest is some heavy duty insulation for your garage.
Here in Oklahoma the garages aren't insulated usually.. just the house.
I went and filled the walls with blow-type insulation and did the attic too.
We did a friends garage too, glued some 2" hard foam insulation to his
metal garage door and it made one heck of a difference.
