Question:
We recently had a new home built in central Minnesota and I am gearing up
for winter by researching garage heaters. The garage is 40'x20'x12'. My
intent is to use the garage for woodworking during the winter months. I
have easy access to a natural gas line from the basement. Any advice?
Answer:
I bought a used shop heater - one of those things that hangs from the
ceiling, connected to the gas with a metal exhaust out the roof. It is a box
about 1.5 foot cube. Takes up no floor space, which is nice. It heats up the
garage fast when needed.
I am very lucky as my house furnace is located in the garage,
which just happens to be my shop for the last 2 years (those that
think a garage is for cars, have been terribly mislead). I have
just cut in registers in both the hot and return air ducts, and
the garage stays at 70 all winter long. I can adjust the air flow
to control temps, but the 70 with them open all the way fits my
needs just fine. My tools like the environment as well!
The new shop will be heated with a Trane gas furnace, and the
new dust collection system should help keep the filters much
cleaner than what I deal with now. Can't wait till it's done,
hopefully by the end of September?
