Question:
Due to lack of space, I'm contemplating moving a number of my unbuilt
kits out to the garage for storage. I live in Florida, so I suspect
heat, humidity, and to a lesser degree bugs, being the major problems.
I plan to keep things like the kit decals, instructions, and any vinyl
masks inside the house, where the air conditioning is. Highest temps I
expect in the garage is in the upper 90 degree F range, which I hope
won't affect the plastic or resin parts. Any thoughts
Answer:
I have kept hundreds of kits in the garage here in Dallas for the last
18 years, with no damage to the plastic. The boxes got pretty dried out,
and some box ends got faded, but that is all. Those that were still
shrinkwrapped (very few), the shrink got really brittle. All kits who
had been opened, had the decals stored inside the house. I had taken
care to apply frosted translucent self-adhesive clear plastic to the
garage windows to minimize sun effects, and for privacy!
I live in FL also and keep everything inside. I agree that nothing serioius
will happen to plastic, but I have purchased some garage stored kits and found
them full of palmetto bug ( the giant roaches) droppings and debris. It ruins
paper, including the box, and will harden and need to be removed from plastic.
Use large plastic bins or some other airtight method of protection from the
garage elements... heat, humidity, dust, insects etc. I also lived in Texas
and never had any problems there, so, for what its worth.. good luck. Best
bet, keep em inside.
