Question:
There is a steel post that's right in the middle of the garage that gets in the way of the car doors.

We had the house built, so I know what's above the post.
Above the post is a laminated beam running front to back.. On top of the beam is 1/2 garage roof and 1/2 of a second story bedroom.

I'd like to remove this post, if possible.

Would it be possible to put another beam either underneath or sistered to this one and add more support at the ends?

Answer:
Even though I don't care for a large single garage door, it would be more convienent and less of a hassle putting the car into the garage
(we've already have had a few "incidents"!)

The house across the street was built with a 2 car garage, single door and it has a full second story above it and it has no post and the joists are 2x12s on the second floor and run the full width of the garage. This was a different builder.

I would think that if I put a triple 2x12 under the existing beam
(along the length), tied them together and added additional support at the ends, that would do the job.
