Question:
My double wide garage door has torsion springs rather then coil springs and
I don't have any literature on adjusting them.
They are in need of adjustment and I would like to find the proper way to do
it while keeping them in proper balance.
Does anyone have the instructions that they could post?
Answer:
Are these the type that hang along side the rails and attach to the door
with a cable running thru a pulley? If so, I adjusted some many years ago
by simply shortening the cables to take out some of the slack while the door
was up and there was little tension on them. You can't do it when the door
is down since that's when they are pulled their tightest.
There may also be some adjustments where the springs are attached at the
opposite end, perhaps some extra holes where you can move the spring to a
point further from the door. Again, best done when the door is up!
You are talking about coil springs. I have them on my shop doors. The ones
on the garage door are torsion springs. They each coil around a shaft as the
door goes down.
I found out how to adjust them. The basics are the same as for coil springs
in that the proper adjustment is when the door will stay at rest about 3 to
4 feet from the floor and the ends of the door are the same distance from
the floor.
The most important part of the adjustment is to raise the door to relieve
all possible tension. Then you have to remove the hinges on the bottom panel
to gain access to the spring adjusters. Then it's a matter of adjusting each
spring to achieve what is said in the above paragraph. You may have to
repeat the process several times until it is correct.
