Question:
I have a room that was turned into a bedroom that was previously a garage.
A stairway was added and I would really like to keep the stairs there -- not
moving the entrance to the house, but they would be in the way of a regular
overhead garage door. An installer measured the area and said a part of the
mechanism would bump into the stairs and permit the door to open only
halfway. Is there a barn type door that swings out, or garage doors on
rollers (like sliding closet doors) available?
Answer:
You can have a competent carpenter build you a set of barn style
out-swing doors. The sliding thing might be harder to seal against the
weather. Make sure the doors have adequate hinges - they will be BIG
and probably heavy so the hinges have to be beefy and whatever the
hinges are fastened to has to be beefy...
I had "space" problems when I installed a Lift in my garage.. I could
not have both the door open and the car up on the lift...The solution
was in fact a Roll up Garage door... The door is metal and rolls up
like a window shade would... when it the up position it extends into the
garage no more then 12-15 inches...
I had noticed these type of doors on loading docks at Grocery stores etc
and really had no problem getting one as the Local Garage Door Company
ordered me two...
