Question:
As a garage door installer and service man of better than a decade, I would
never recommend putting white lithium grease on a garage door. Nor would I
recommend silicone. As one person has responded that a light household oil
works fine. I used a solution of maybe 5 parts WD-40 to 2 parts motor oil.
This was what worked best for me in my experience.
Just double checking... you do mean the WD-40 that is a penetrating oil, right?
Also, what weight of motor oil do you use? 10W30 or other?
Answer:
I've been using 10:30 motor oil for
more years than I care to think about and believe me that's all you need.
The bearings in most garage door rollers are not what you would call
precision bearings (unless their sealed in which case they don't have to be
lubricated) and all you want the oil to do is 1.0 wash out the grime from
the open faced bearings and 2.0 provide some degree of lubrication.
Many of the garage door service people use oil from a spray can and they try
and purchase something that sticks to the roller better but thats only
because firstly it looks kinda tacky to get out the old oil can and start
squirting motor oil all over the place and secondly because they are
concerned about it getting all over the floor.
