Question:
I need to locate information on how to changing garage door panels.
Any hints, ideas, suggestions of my plan would be appreciated!
Answer:
do you have a 4 panel one on top of the other panel made of wood. i need
to change one also and cant find any wooden door places that will be
able to sell me the one panel i need. they all want to push the sheet
metal doors............
changing them is no problem, just raise the door, remove the cable to
relieve the pressure on the two springs, keep door in upright position
as it is very heavy and will fall an hurt you, i use three to four pair
of vice grips on the rail that the rollers are in, put one pair behind
the second panel on each side, and then one each behind a roller in the
third panel and keep a screw driver in an hole in the rail to stop the
last panel from coming down... just unbolt the rollers and hinged things
on the inside of the door, first the bottom panel, if thats the one you
have to replace then thats all to it. if say youi have to go all the
way to the top panel then do them one at a time and you can do it by
yourself, dont forget to remove the vicegrips on each as you are ready
to lower it down the track. there are other ways to do it but doing
the work by myself i find this the easiest way to handle all this
weight. the guy across the street, pretty big guy, 6'6" took his springs
off and thought he was going to lower the whole thing, well he got
caught and stopped midway and he was holding it there, his wife ran over
to him and he screeming to get away, i ran to him also knowing he was in
trouble, he then dropped the doors, two panels broke............. so i
learned from his experience, it does not look heavy, but it is, always
try them one panel at a time.
