Question:
Has anyone ever seen a garage door veneer kit?
I'm thinking it shouldn't be too difficult to apply wood to existing
doors, but it would take some tweaking to [1] keep the top clearance
[2] keep the horizontal seams from showing, but functional [3]
increase the tension of the springs with the extra wood and hardware.
Answer:
The track would need to be pulled away from the wall as the thickness
of the wood that is being applied. You have two choices, take one of
the same pieces of lumber that you putting on the door and put it behind
the track (looks better if you do it the full height of track) or buy
new track brackets that are longer.
You may have to also brace or strengthen the horizontal tracks to
support the weight of the door.
Depending on what rollers your door currently has you may also have to
replace those as well.
As Rico stated you will need new springs or may have to add another
spring to compensate for the additional weight. Also the current
cables and drums may not be rated for the new weight.
You can't keep the seams from showing entirely you just need to make
the design so they are not so obvious.
I do not know of a kit either, but putting the wood on is the easy
part. Getting the door to work properly afterwards is the challenge &
when it is all said & done that $3000.00 a door may not seem so bad
afterall.
