Question:
We put off getting a new garage door for four years now. The garage door
opener broke today so we figured we might as well get a new garage door too.
Our garage door is not a standard size (15ft 8in) so the off the rack ones
at Lowe's and Home Depot will not work for us. Any recommendations on where
to get one?
Answer:
-I've been extremely pleased with Custom Overhead Doors on two occasions, both
repairs. The first was just a spring replacement, done by a guy who really
seemed to know what he was doing. Then my parents garage door went totally
"conkernile" when they were out of town. Rollers missing, track bent, one side
a foot lower than the other. A neighbor and I spent probably 2 hours trying to
get it to at least look sort of normal... The next morning I called Overhead
and they sent someone out within hours. It took him just about 15 very clever
minutes to get things back on track, and probably another half hour or so
getting everything straightened out and working perfectly.
I thought their prices were fairly reasonable, but I was quite impressed with
the guys who work there.
-My Craftsman electric garage door opener suffered a stripped gear. Sears
sold me a replacement gear kit for $20. I thought that was better than
replacing an otherwise good door opener.
Suggestion for all owners of electric garage door openers... If the unit is
more than five years old, remove the cover and apply a liberal gob of grease
to the gearworks. Use whatever you have on hand. Any kind of grease is
better than no grease at all.
-One other suggestion - tighten ALL the nuts and screws on your door every
6 months. If you forget, a reminder is finding a nut inthe middle of the
garage
and not knowing where it came from. Or do it when you change yor clocks
and smoke detector batteries (that means you're a month late).
Failure to do this will cause the wheels to become misaligned and that will
cause more bad things to happen, eventually requiring a new door or opener.
